A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Formulas are developed for a gravity dam having a triangular section and a vertical up-stream face that is curved in plan to a radius, Ru. It is shown that the radius of curvature influences the stresses considerably and that it is never safe to neglect the curvature as has been customary in the past. The middle-third theorem, therefore, does not hold for arched dams.
