Lifeline Damage from the January 26, 2001 M7.7 Gujarat, India Earthquake
On January 26, 2001 at 8:46 local time, there was a magnitude 7.9 (Mw) earthquake in the seismically active area of the Kachchh (Kutch) District of the Gujarat State of India about 600 km northwest of Mubai (Bombay). It is estimated there were nearly 20,000 deaths, 150,000 injuries and 15,700,000 people affected by the earthquake in the State of Gujarat (1991 population — 37,800,000). In the Kutch District (population 1,200,000) about 600,000 people live in the four largest cities (Gandhiham — 400,000, Bhuj — 110,000, Anjar — 60,000, and Bachau — 40,000). The remainder lives in 884 villages. In Kutch, 52.6% of the housing stock (257,500 houses) was destroyed and a total of 13,563,000 houses (7.5%) were damaged/destroyed in the Gujarat State. Most of these buildings were non-engineered, unreinforced stone masonry buildings. However, there were a few instances of engineered reinforced concrete structures collapsing, which would indicate poor design, material and/or construction.
