Modeling Permanent Deformation under Repetitive Loads
Analysis of long-term performance of pavement sections under wheel loads is normally conducted in two separate steps: first, estimation of the resilient response based on a mechanistic model; second, calculation of the permanent deformation from empirical equations. This approach, however, does not consider modulus degradation due to cyclic loads and some types of reinforcement, such as geosynthetics. New models are proposed for use in the analysis of permanent deformation in unpaved roadway sections based on equivalent-linear modeling of secant modulus. Examples of estimating the model parameters are presented based on both laboratory permanent deformation tests, followed by application examples. The permanent behavior of unpaved roadway sections were successfully simulated using the suggested method, which however requires further validation through large-scale performance data.
