Stress Measurements on the Hell Gate Arch Bridge
The magnitude of the Hell Gate Arch Bridge and its interesting construction features suggested the desirability of utilizing the bridge as an instrument for scientific research by conducting a series of stress measurements extending through all the dilferent stages of erection until the structure was completed. As a result of these observations, the Hell Gate Arch is probably the only structure ever built in which the true stress conditions are known from experimental determination.
