Flood Forecasting and Management of Underground Spaces
Many large cities in Japan have well-developed underground spaces. The entry of a large volume of rainwater into the underground spaces during heavy rains may not only disrupt public transportation services (e.g. railways) but also cause fatal incidents. In addition, Japan is often struck by torrential rains with an hourly rainfall exceeding 100mm in recent years. Recognizing this situation, the authors studied methods for predicting the intensity and return period of rainfalls that could submerge underground spaces, and the propagation paths of rainwater flowing into underground spaces. For predicting submergence process, a flood simulation analysis for an underground shopping center was performed using a distribution type three-dimensional model, which took into consideration the capacity of sewerage facilities and their link with the road network on the ground surface and the underground spaces. Using the simulation results, the authors identified areas that are prone to flooding, and produced data that would help underground space administrators prepare public relations documents for educating underground space users on disaster prevention and evacuation during disasters.
