Miniature System of First-Order Alignment and Triangulation Control
An unusual type of survey at the Tygart Dam, on the Tygart River, 2 miles upstream from Grafton, W. Va. (Fig. 1), is described in this paper. Completed early in 1938, the structure was built by the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army (Pittsburgh (Pa.) District) and is the largest concrete gravity dam east of the Mississippi River, containing 1,250,000 cu yd of concrete. The spillway section rises 207 ft above the stream bed and has a maximum capacity of 210,000 cu ft per sec. Flanking the spillway section are non-overflow sections 23 ft higher. The total length of the dam at the top is 1,921 ft.
