In dealing with the subject of coast lighting, etc., in England, it is unnecessary for the writer to describe the history of British light-houses and other aids to navigation except for a comparatively recent period, as the previous aspects of the question have already been fully treated by others, especially by the writer’s distinguished predecessor in the office of Engineer-in-Chief to the Trinity House, the late Sir James N. Douglass, F. R. S., who wrote several important papers.
