Investigating the Critical Success Factors for Small Contractors to Implement Sustainable Construction
This study aims to identify and to evaluate the critical success factors (CSFs) for small contractors to conduct sustainable construction projects. To achieve these goals, a comprehensive literature review and pilot interviews with three experienced industry experts were conducted firstly, followed by a questionnaire survey administered to 30 small contractors from the construction industry of Singapore. Results showed that the top ten CSFs for small contractors to implement sustainable construction are “having competent human resources in sustainable construction”, “enacting the green policies established by authorities”, “support of senior management”, “sustainability of organization structure”, “training staff technically and ideologically”, “innovative management approaches”, “relationship with subcontractors or suppliers”, “engaging personnel with knowledge in sustainable construction”, “cost control”, and “personality and capability of project manager”. This study enriches the knowledge of sustainable construction research. It can also help the industry practitioners to enhance their understanding of sustainable construction.
