Real-Time and Remote Instrumentation Monitoring at the Virginia State Capitol
A deep excavation immediately adjacent to the Virginia State Capitol building required monitoring the building during construction. A real-time instrumentation system was installed, consisting of three theodolites with about 80 optical prisms, two in-place and one manual inclinometers, temperature sensors, and the necessary data acquisition hardware, software, computers, and Internet connection. The system proved to be an effective means of monitoring movements as well as helping to control the various phases of the construction. The alarm signals issued by the system proved very useful, resulting in close coordination of construction activities among the team and preventing movements from exceeding the desired tolerances.
