Introducing HG Shock Capturing Scheme for Oil Spill Simulation
In this study, a description of a two layers model for simulating oil spills in seas has been given. The model includes many significant processes: advection, surface spreading, evaporation, dissolution, emulsification, the interaction of oil slick with the shoreline, sedimentation and the temporal variations of oil viscosity, density, surface-tension, etc. The oil horizontal movement is computed using a 3rd order upwind scheme with innovative HG (Heydariah - Ghiassi) flux limiter implementation method. All the numerical solution dispersion errors are totally diminished by HG limiter. Its accuracy was tested against other famous limiters in this article and the results have been shown. Also three test problems are selected on the basis of simplicity and ease of reproducibility, and are intended to represent basic characteristics of behavior that might be encountered in practice. Sample simulations for oil spill in the Rajai Port located south of Iran in Persian Gulf are presented. The theoretical model is verified against most popular empirical formulas. A comparison of numerical results with the observed data shows good conformity.
