Safety Mindfulness: A Buffer between Job Stress and Safety Performance of Construction Workers
Job stress has been regarded as one serious threat to construction workers’ health and safety. Despite the potential benefits of mindfulness for alleviating stress, few studies have explored the mindfulness–safety relationship. This research aimed at exploring the moderating effect of mindfulness on the relationship between job stress and safety violations. Based on one large questionnaire, the hypothetical model was verified. The findings indicated that when facing higher work conflict and poor working environment, construction workers were more likely to break safety rules, whereas the effect of work overload was not significant. Mindful workers tend to have better safety performance, and mindfulness negatively moderated the job stress–safety relationship. This research contributed to the current construction safety literature through empirically examining the stress–safety relationship, and providing meaningful implications improving safety through the mindfulness intervention.
