Strain Distributions in Centrifuge Model Energy Foundations
This paper presents the results from a centrifuge test focused on evaluating the strain distributions in a scale-model energy foundation during mechanical loading, heating, and cooling. Specifically, this paper is focused on the evaluation of the response of a foundation with its tip resting on a rigid substrate. After application of a mechanical load, a heat exchange fluid was circulated through tubing in the model foundation until the foundation reached a constant temperature. In addition to the strain distribution data, the applied load, soil and foundation temperatures, foundation butt movement, soil profile surface deformations, and vertical and radial distributions in temperature were monitored, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the foundation performance. This paper provides details of the model foundation including embedded strain gages and thermocouples, typical test results, and comparison of the measured strain distributions with established theories.
