Discussions on the Application of the Pipe Bursting Method for Pipeline Rehabilitation
Trenchless pipe replacement, which involves pipe bursting, is a construction method used for replacing existing and deteriorated underground pipelines with totally new pipe of equal or greater diameter. It is a sustainable and cost-efficient pipeline replacement method as compared with the conventional open trench activities which can result in noise, traffic disruptions, and environmental impacts. In recent years, the use of trenchless pipe replacement has grown significantly in China. This paper provides discussion on several key technical problems in pipe bursting operations, including ground displacement, soil conditions, scratches on new pipe, and pull force analysis. The results from this work should help pipeline managers and engineers in planning successful pipe bursting and assessing risk. To gain some insight into the pipe bursting, this paper introduces the basic mechanism and installation procedure of this trenchless process.
