Seismic Design Requirements for Nonbuilding Structures
In addition to a number of editorial changes, the 2010 edition of ASCE 7 will contain a number of important changes that affect nonbuilding structures. This paper discusses these important changes and how these changes will impact the design and construction of nonbuilding structures. The significant detailing requirements for large breech openings in reinforced concrete stacks combined with a change in R and Ωo values added to the standard in response to damage of reinforced concrete stacks in a major earthquake in Turkey are reviewed. The modifications to the seismic requirements of ACI 350.3 to bring that document into compliance with ASCE 7 for the design of ground supported concrete tanks are discussed. The revised provisions that provide some relief to the excessive sloshing wave heights calculated under ASCE 7-05 for ground supported storage tanks are reviewed. Anchorage requirements for many nonbuilding structures are clarified. Steel storage rack requirements, updated to meet FEMA 460 and ANSI MH 16.1–2008, are discussed.
