Life-Cycle Performance of Reinforced Concrete Structures Exposed to Aggressive Agents: Design Issues
This paper is aimed to show that concrete members designed to have the same initial performance may exhibit different reliabilities over time depending on the shape of the cross-section. The lifetime structural performance of three cross-sections, designed to have the same initial bending strength with the same amount of reinforcement, material properties and concrete cover, is investigated both in deterministic and probabilistic terms. The results show that the equal performance of the cross-sections in the undamaged state is lost in time due to damage, and that the shape of the cross-section significantly affects their reliabilities over time.
