Flood Risk Management for Urban Drainage Systems by Simulation and Optimization
An ongoing European research project in the EUREKA framework (Σ!2255 RisUrSim), covering flood risk management in urban areas is presented. The overall objective is the development of an integrated planning and management tool to allow cost effective management for urban drainage systems. Focusing on flooding events caused by surcharged sewer systems, a detailed dual drainage simulation model describes the interaction between surface and sewer flow in order to most accurately compute water levels above ground and assess possible damage costs. The project consortium includes industrial mathematics and water engineering research institutes, municipal drainage works as well as insurance companies.
