A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
One of the most interesting problems of engineering, as well as one of the most important works of internal improvement our government has been called upon to engage in, is that of providing an adequate navigable outlet to the gulf from the Mississippi river—an outlet for the mightiest system of internal navigation and for the commercial products pf the most extensive and fruitful valley of the earth. It is well known that the mouths of the several d e lta arms, or “passes,” of the Mississippi are obstructed by bars over which 15 feet of water is rather more than an average maximum, even for the greatest of these—the “Southwest.”
