FEM Simulation of Progressive Failure for Dense Sandy Foundation
The classical theories on the bearing capacity of foundation on sandy grounds are too simplified to explain the progressive failure mode of dense sandy foundation. This paper attempts to simulate the bearing capacity characteristics of strip footing on sand and the progressive failure of the sandy foundation. To fully take into account the factors influencing sand strength and deformations - including the effects of stress history, anisotropy, confining pressure, void ratio, dilatancy and strain localization into shear bands, as well as the viscous behavior of sand - a visco-elastoplastic constitutive model developed for the Toyoura sand based on extensive experiment results is used in the FEM simulations. Comparisons are made between test and simulated results at different stages of loading to give a clear insight into the full process of progressive failure. It is shown that the presented model can reasonably recapture the sand characteristics and the progressive failure of sandy foundation.
