Assessment of Existing Barrier Warrants for Roadside Slopes
The Roadside Design Guide acknowledges the shortcomings of its figure 5-1 for determining barrier need based on embankment geometry which dates to a 1967 study. This study confirmed what was observed as early as 1967 and again in 1987, when slopes are free of all other hazards, the addition of w-beam guardrail does not reduce the risk of observing an A+K crash. Recent research conducted on the probability of rollover has led to an improved understanding of slopes. This paper uses a risk-based approach to review the current RDG barrier considerations for embankments against the improved understanding of the probability of rollover and the subsequent severity of those crashes. Both the frequency and severity of crashes with and without 31-inch tall w-beam guardrails are estimated and the risk of observing an incapacitating or fatal injury crash calculated.
