Effects of Different Support Modeling Assumptions on the Seismic Response of Ordinary Bridges
Two different support configurations have been used in the seismic design of the State Route 21 over Interstate 69 Bridge and the Forrester Road over Interstate 69 Bridge, one employing seat-type abutments with rigid bent foundations (Basic support configuration) and the second employing stub wall abutment with flexible bent foundations (Nonlinear Spring support configuration). The accuracy and efficiency of each support configuration in terms of maximum seismic displacement demand and the displacement ductility has been evaluated using the SAP2000 computer program. The results indicate that using the Basic support configuration could provide more conservative results, while needing less modeling effort.
