Effect of Cement on Palm Kernel Shell Ash Stabilized Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement As Highway Pavement Material
A laboratory evaluation of the characteristics of palm kernel shell ash (PKSA) /cement-stabilized, reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) subjected to British Standard Heavy (BSH) (modified Proctor) compactive effort was carried to determine the compaction characteristics, California bearing ratio (CBR) and durability characteristics of the mixtures. Test results show that the properties of RAP improved when treated with PKSA and up to 6 % cement (C) additive. The particle size grading improved from 89.5% coarse aggregates for 100% RAP to 80-99.5% coarse aggregate with 0.5-20 % fines for the various RAP + PKSA + C mixes containing up to 6% cement. Optimum CBR values of 55 (unsoaked) and 60% (soaked in water for 24 hours) for 70% RAP + 24% PKSA + 6% Cement mix is durable with minimum water absorption characteristic and can be used as subbase and subgrade materials in road construction.
