Acceptance Criteria to Protect Historic Structures
The value assigned to historic buildings goes well beyond their association with times long since past. The architectural aesthetic associated with this unique class of existing buildings provides visitors and occupants with an unparalleled experience of the built environment. It is, therefore, only natural that a key design objective of historic building renovation/retrofit projects be the preservation of building elements that have become integrally linked to the structure's iconic status. Recognizing the need to operate within these bounds, physical security design solutions must explore the "gray zones" of criteria documents and push the boundaries of innovative and cost-effective performance based design to optimally address identified risk. The resulting design efforts have the potential to introduce tailor made solutions to mitigate vulnerability without burdening the overall project vision or budget.
