Cyclic Shear Strength Characteristics of Granulated Coal Ash
The present study was performed to confirm the applicability of granulated coal ash as reclamation material with adequate resistance against liquefaction during earthquake. Granulated coal ash was subjected to cyclic triaxial tests and the results were compared with those of natural sands to examine the cyclic shear properties of the material. The results revealed that the slope of the cyclic shear strength curve of granulated coal ash was gentle under high confining pressure, but it was still higher than those of natural sands. It was also observed in another series of cyclic triaxial tests that granulated coal ash underwent remarkable particle crushing. Because some energy of granulated coal ash is spent on particle crushing, it is thought that its cumulative dissipated energy is larger than that of natural sand. As a result, the cyclic shear strength of granulated coal ash is observed to be higher than that of natural sand.
