A GIS-Based Approach to Assessing Mine Waste Pile Stability
Stability of a waste rock pile at an abandoned mine site was evaluated to identify the need for stabilization. The geometry of the rock waste pile is not uniform, either in terms of the surface slope or thickness. A GIS-base program was used to model the possible geometry of the pile based on topographic data. Large-scale measurements of strength and the pile geometry data were combined with the GIS program to provide an estimated factor of safety for all locations on the pile based on the infinite slope method. The GIS-based approach was found to be an efficient means to identify pile characteristics and to provide and reasonable first-order stability assessment.
