Analysis of a Failed Embankment on Peaty Ground
The difficulty in estimating engineering properties of peat has prompted the need to use combined field and laboratory tests coupled with an empirical procedure for stability analysis of embankments on peaty ground. Accordingly, this paper presents a case history of stability analysis for construction of an embankment on peaty ground for an expressway in multi-loading stages that failed at a height of 6.3 m. The method outlined here, which is the current state of the practice in Japan, employs cone penetration tests and direct shear tests using Mikasa's apparatus for the process of investigation, analysis, and quality control with a consistent approach.
