A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
At the Chicago Exhibition, in 1893, was exhibited for the first time the optical apparatus which had first been introduced in France under the name of “feux-éclairs” or flashing lights. It consists of a small number of lens panels of large opening, and is mounted on a float rapidly rotating in a mercury vat. Since 1893 the use of this apparatus has been extended considerably. It is found in almost all countries, and in France all important light-houses have been reinstalled successively in accordance with this system.
