Analysis of Circular Arches on Elastic Abutments
The general method for analyzing constant thickness circular arches resting on elastic abutments and subjected to a uniformly distributed radial load is briefly outlined. The determination of important characteristics such as the forces and moments at critical sections are generalized through a set of simple non-dimensional parameters, and a simple method of determining the suitability of such arches in arch dam design is illustrated. Stress factors are presented that would enable easy determination of the stresses in such arches. A new constant correlating the crown deflection and thrust that was obtained during this investigation is presented.
