Collapse of Robinson Road Bridge Falsework
On October 27, 2008, Span 1 of the Robinson Road Bridge, being constructed to cross over Interstate 84 in Nampa, Idaho, collapsed. The bridge was being constructed in a staging area on temporary falsework supports and, after completion, was to have been transported to its final location on completed abutments and piers by a self-propelled modular transport (SPMT) device. Fourteen construction workers were on the elevated span when it fell and they sustained various injuries. Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) was hired to determine the cause of the collapse. This paper will focus on our investigation of the falsework collapse and present our findings of cause, which concluded that a critical lack of effective bracing of falsework transfer beams caused the collapse. A discussion of falsework bracing requirements and methods of analysis of effectively unbraced beams are presented.
