Critical Gear Configurations and Positions for Rigid Airport Pavements – Observations and Analyses
Selected full-scale test data from the National Airport Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), USA are presented in this paper to show response features in the interior area, at the longitudinal and transverse joints of airport rigid pavement slabs before any macro crack was observed. The effects of gear configurations and critical locations are analyzed and discussed. Superposition of responses is used to verify that a new rigid pavement is generally a linear elastic system as it has been broadly modeled in many design procedures, including in the current FAA design specifications. The importance of the appropriate use of finite element models in conjunction with full scale and laboratory test data is also discussed. Though both test data and numerical results are presented, this paper focuses on analyzing the pavement behavior from test data rather than from theoretical or numerical analysis.
