Safe Loads on Dog-Leg Piles
One of the essential requirements for the acceptability of steel-encased or pip e piles is often based on whether or not some portion of the bottom of such piles can be seen after they have been driven. As this requirement involves the loss of considerable numbers of piles on most pile installations, it is desirable to salvage those having structural value. For this purpose, the equipment described in this paper, which can be lowered into piles to measure their curvature, was devised. In the paper are described several projects where the equipment was u se d, and a logical analytical method is presented for evaluating the load-carrying capacity of such piles-the method having been verified by load tests.
