In 1889 the author spent a few days in Holland, and was much impressed by the engineering marvels that he saw. The time was too short and his acquaintance with the country too superficial to make his visit of any profit. He determined, however, to avail himself of the first opportunity for another visit. With this view, after acquiring a little knowledge. of the Dutch language, he had some correspondence with acquaintances in Holland, and read a few books that were reecommended to him.
