Design Approach of Shear-Property Based Asphalt Pavement Structure for Long and Steep Sections
Relying on the reconstruction project of Togo No. 1 Highway, the typical distress of asphalt pavement in long and steep sections was investigated and its mechanical characteristics were analyzed. The results indicated that rutting and interlaminar slip were the typical distresses of long and steep sections, and these distresses were mainly caused by asphalt layer shear stress and interlaminar shear stress. Then, an asphalt pavement design approach of long and steep sections was proposed from the aspects of asphalt mixture shear property and interlaminar slip property. Next, the adopted mechanical control parameters, the standard of these design parameters, and the designing process were given. The design principles and recommendations on asphalt pavement design of long and steep sections were provided. Finally, the example of the asphalt pavement structure design of the No. 1 Highway was given.
