    Repair of Concrete Elements Using Externally Bonded Reinforcement: 30 Year History

    When deficiencies in load carrying capacities are discovered in reinforced concrete elements, various options for stregthening the deficient members are evaluated by engineers in consultation with the owners and other stakeholders. These include removal and replacement of the deficient elements, strengthening by adding conventional reinforcement and encapsulating the new reinforcement by formed and placed concrete or by shotcreting or using externally bonded reinforcement. Externally bonded reinforcement can comprise of either epoxy bonded steel plates or epoxy bonded fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Some case histories of projects where externally bonded reinforcement was used to restore structural capacities of deficient structural members are discussed in this paper.
