Offshore Construction: Site Design Considerations
A milestone in the construction of an offshore production/drilling platform is reaching self-sufficiency. In attaining this goal the construction involves three basic phases: (1) The work performed from a derrick barge which includes the setting of the jacket, moss deck, and various modules; (2) preparing a semisubmersible platform or other craft to serve as the support vessel during hook-up work; and (3) the hookup and checkout necessary to attain self-sufficiency. A thorough understanding of the work performed in each area is essential to the contractor for planning purposes and site design. The items critical for self-sufficiency are focused on since many are unique to this type of project. Necessary utilities are covered, as well as safety equipment. The equipment needed for day-to-day operations is examined, including offices and shops. Warehousing and general work safety considerations are also explored.
