This paper is an overview of the subject of dam decommissioning. Dam decommissioning is defined as the complete or partial removal of a dam, or a significant change in the operation of a dam. The reasons for the increased number of dams being decommissioned include concern regarding the environmental effects of dams, the aging of the country's dams, and the increased cost of operating dams to meet new operating regulations or design criteria. This comes at a time of current and predicted shortages of water and energy for the increasing population. Several hundred small dams that have outlived their original purpose have been decommissioned in the United States. Today, several large dams that are still providing benefits and have a significant amount of useful life remaining are being considered for decommissioning. The decommissioning of these dams will have far-reaching social, environmental, and economic effects, many of which are undefined.
