The Water-Works of Guantanamo, Cuba
The town of Guantanamo is situated 15 miles in the interior from its port of entry, Caimanera, with which it is connected by rail. The bay is one of the finest in Cuba. It was used as a base by the United States Navy in the late war with Spain, and probably will be one of the naval stations to be selected under the Platt amendment.$$$$ The country surrounding Guantanamo is one of the largest sugarproducing sections, while the hills in view from the town were at one time dotted with the houses of coffee planters. The natural conditions point to a bright future for Guantanamo under a stable government. Its population is 7 137. The population within the limits of the municipality (immediate surrounding country) is 28 063.
