A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Integration Insights from the Field: Views from Architectural Practitioners
With the advent of Integrated Project Delivery and BIM, there are growing demands on structural engineers who design buildings to become more integrative in their work. This paper presents architects' views on integration and the skills they are seeking from engineers as found in a qualitative analysis research study conducted with architects and structural engineers on the topic of integration. It was found that architects emphasized the integrative process and the final articulation of the structure. The ability of structural engineers to understand architectural design was seen by architects as a critical to integrative work. Responsiveness, flexibility, and willingness to investigate solutions were valued traits in a collaborative relationship. The initial results of this study presented here allow engineers to understand how integration is seen by architects and to gain information to improve their own practices.
