Natural Waterways: A Review of the Development of Natural Waterways in the Netherlands
One might rightly ask whether the great Dutch rivers, of which Fig. 1 gives a general survey, are still free streams, following the ways chosen by Nature in their courses to the ocean. These waterways, which in diluvian times formed by deposits, the higher parts of the Nether lands, for a considerable part of its area, in the shallow sea near the coast, and which in post-diluvia times supplied soil for the formation and manuring of the low delta, land for many centuries, have generally become artificial products in the Netherlands of the present time, and have had to submit to the laws Man has laid down for them. Steadily guided, they can only pursue their courses along the fixed ways assigned to them.
