Reliability Based Performance Evaluation of Earth Retaining Structures
In this paper, attention is focused on the reliability based performance evaluation of a cantilever retaining structure with cohesionless dry backfill subjected to random surcharge loading. Keeping this in view, a limit surface has been defined as the difference between the resisting moment and overturning moment acting on the structure while considering the randomness of different parameters contributing to the stability of the retaining structure e.g. random surcharge loading, unit weight of soil and concrete, friction angle of soil and wall friction angle etc. Probability of failure due to overturning of wall with random surcharge loading has been evaluated using Cornel's reliability index. Sensitivity analysis of probability of failure is carried for different wall heights, base slab length and thickness of the wall.
