Discussion on Paper CLXX. Brick Arches for Large Sewers
Hering has sent me two sketches with a brief statement of the main points of difference between the “old” and the “new plans,” from which I learn that in some respects the mode of constructing sewers in Philadelphia has been peculiar. I am ignorant of the circumstances which led to the introduction of the “old plan” at first, but it seems strange to me that it should ever have been adopted for general purposes, whatever might have been advisable in some special cases. The “new plan” is substantially that which has been known to the profession, in connection with the stability of arches, for a long time.
