Assessment of Extent of Capacity Loss in Deteriorated Highway Bridges
The reinforced concrete bridges located in coastal areas are exposed to deteriorating processes during their service lifetime. The performance of such bridges is highly dependent on the extent of change in properties of concrete and reinforcing bars. Therefore, it is necessary to employ reliable approaches to predict the capacity losses due to the deterioration mechanisms. Towards this goal, the current paper studies the effects of chloride-induced corrosion on the capacity of bridges. Considering the fact that the structural degradation occurs after corrosion initiation, this paper develops a computational framework to estimate corrosion initiation time through deterministic and probabilistic approaches. Although the deterministic approach significantly reduces the uncertainties associated with the simplifying assumptions, it does not consider the uncertainties corresponding to the model parameters. Hence, the effects of parameter variability are studied by the probabilistic approach. The probabilistic estimation of corrosion initiation time is used to predict the remained capacity of a set of case-study bridges.
