Effects of roughness on skin friction of flat plate at very high Reynolds numbers can be investigated by experiments in pipe at moderate Reynolds numbers if roughness of plate is reproduced exactly in pipe; experiments at air speeds up to 270 ft per sec in pipe of 2 in. diam; effect of roughness in pipe can be correlated with drag of circular cylinder on plane wall, as obtained from pressure distribution around cylinder.
