Loading Considerations for Tensioned Fabric Structures
Tensioned fabric structures are lightweight systems that generally have an uncommon ability to carry very high loads in relation to their self-weight. These fabric membranes are typically used as building enclosures and roofs and as such are subject to environmental rather than occupancy loads. Determination of design loads from ASCE 7 and building codes can be difficult due to unique and complex forms and the surface characteristics of these structures. Fabric membrane structures are typically non-linear in their load response, consequently superposition of load effects is not valid. The paper will review these and other challenges of applying ASCE 7 to these structures and review examples. The paper will provide insight into the topic in the second edition of the ASCE Special Publication, "Tensioned Fabric Structures".
