Seismic Vulnerability of Select Critical Bridges in North Mississippi
Three Coldwater River crossings located on federal highways in north Mississippi are selected for study of seismic vulnerability. Regional risk analysis has highlighted the critical nature of the highway bridges in the transportation network. Finite element models of varying complexity are developed for these structures to enhance the results of the fragility based risk study. The results are used to establish potential vulnerability incorporating site specific soil and design data based on seismic response analysis. Time history and pushover analyses are performed to estimate axial forces, shear forces, and bending moments in piles and columns of typical bent substructures. The results are compared to substructure design and test pile data. Complex interaction of axial force and bending is observed in the batter piles of typical intermediate bents during lateral shaking at levels far exceeding the design capacities which did not account for seismic demand. Uncertainties in the model assumptions and soil data indicate a more comprehensive study considering the influence of liquefaction is recommended.
