Challenges of Coastal Engineering in Alaska
Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Coastal Engineering Section has developed numerous designs for Alaska's arctic conditions and exposed shorelines. This paper discusses the unique challenges and procedures followed to develop site specific designs. It will address designing projects in remote areas of Alaska with little data available. Consideration of lower cost alternatives are often explored for shore protection due to the high cost of arctic construction. Climate change has become synonymous with natural coastal processes in Alaska, causing a heightened awareness of erosion but not accretion or irreversible erosion. This increased awareness of erosion, coupled with information inferring all erosion is irreversible, may be misleading. Communities may need to retreat, adapt or relocate. Or, they may simply need to a better understanding of natural shoreline processes.
