Geosynthetic Mega Structures: The Largest Geosynthetic Structures in North America
Geosynthetics are frequently used and readily accepted for stabilization in roadway structures, subsurface drainage in engineered structures, and even as reinforcement for small landscape walls. Unfortunately, many engineers do not recognize the true potential of geosynthetics for use in large scale — "mega" engineered structures. Many engineers believe that "plastic" geosynthetics are only suitable for small non-critical structures. This paper showcases two geosynthetically reinforced "mega" structures that have received nationally televised attention and are the largest of their kind in North America. These two projects highlight the fact that geosynthetics are an ideal, cost effective material to be used for large scale soil structures. The 73.8 meters (242 feet) high geogrid reinforced slope at Yeager Airport, Charleston, WV is the highest 1H:1V (45 degree) geogrid reinforced slope in North America. The 32 meter (105 feet) high near vertical wall at Trump National Golf Course (formerly Ocean Trails) is the tallest near vertical geotextile reinforced wrap faced buttress wall in North America. These two highly visible "mega" structures rely heavily on the long-term strength of the geosynthetics for reinforcement and are used by the public on a daily basis.
