A Sustainable Resilient Temporary Home
Natural disasters devastate communities and families. People that have endured them may have nowhere to go, and their local community structures could have been devastated. Traveling out of the area may not be possible; they are often crowded into shelters or given inferior, substandard housing. Temporary housing solutions for a week or two can quickly turn into a harsh reality for several months or even years, destroying the resilience that housing and communities provide. Designing a resilient temporary home, 280 sq. ft., transportable to areas in need after a disaster and that is appropriate in multiple climate zones, is the goal. Comparing basic passive principles found in four LEED Platinum and Passive House case studies from four climates zones: temperate, hot humid, hot arid, and cold for their façade, wall assembly, roof assembly, interior, and equipment will determine how one home could be designed to be successful for multiple climate zones in these disasters.
