Underground Upgrade
The $85.4-million East Boston Branch Sewer Relief Project used a combination of cured-in-place pipe lining, microtunneling, pipe bursting, and opencut excavation methods to upgrade 4.5 mi of the aging interceptor system serving East Boston. Despite the numerous challenges associated with designing and implementing a major infrastructure upgrade in a heavily urbanized setting, the project successfully met a court-ordered deadline and greatly reduced the volume of combined sewer overflows reaching local waterways.
