In the calculation of cross-sections of roads and railroads strict accuracy is an impossibility, whether we plot them and determine the areas rigorously, or whether we obtain the areas from diagrams prepared by graphic methods; because the basis of the calculation, the shape of the ground, cannot be given exactly, owing to the innumerable deviations in the outline of the leveling.
