Water main breaks and repairs are a normal part of the City of Baltimore's operation of its water distribution pipeline system. Sometimes, however, the circumstances and situations surrounding a water main break are much different than normal. Such a situation recently happened when a water main break occurred during the same time and at the same location as a freight train derailment in a tunnel and subsequent chemical fire in the heart of the City. The situations and events challenged the notion that water main repairs are straightforward.
